We’re working with R.J Haney Heritage Village & Museum in Salmon Arm to source a dynamic and adaptable General Manager to oversee day-to-day operations while advancing the organization’s long-term vision, financial health, and public profile.

THE OPPORTUNITY

R.J Haney Heritage Village & Museum operates as a leading heritage and cultural destination in the BC Interior. The site encompasses a heritage village, museum spaces, a licensed restaurant, venue rental, the Children’s Museum & Discovery Centre, and nature trails.

The General Manager leads a team of staff and supports a team of volunteers to ensure an integrated visitor experience and strong organizational performance. This role is ideal for an entrepreneurial-minded leader who thrives in a community-based organization and deals comfortably with competing priorities and diverse responsibilities.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

Organizational Leadership and Strategy
• Implements the Board-approved Strategic Plan, contributes to its ongoing development, and directs its implementation through the annual Tactical Plan.
• Provides professional advice and reporting to the Board on operations, risks, opportunities, and organizational performance.
• Ensures compliance with Board policies and supports effective governance through timely reporting, risk identification, and implementation of Board decisions.
• Ensures the organization’s vision, mission, and values are reflected in all activities and decision-making.

Operations and Site Management

• Provides leadership and accountability for the daily operations of the heritage village, museum facilities, grounds, and public programs.
• Leads seasonal operations, special events, and public programming that support visitor experience, tourism, and earned revenue.
• Ensures operational readiness and effective delivery of programming, specifically during the peak season and major events.
• Ensures buildings, artifacts, collections, and archives are properly maintained in accordance with professional and regulatory standards through delegated oversight.

Human Resources and Volunteer Management
• Recruits, supervises, and evaluates staff, including seasonal and part-time employees, and delegates appropriate oversight to supervisors.
• Supports volunteer development and engagement through effective leadership and collaboration with the volunteer coordinator.
• Ensures compliance with employment standards, workplace safety, and organizational policies.

Financial Management and Fund Development
• Prepares and manages the annual operating budgets, as approved by the Board.
• Monitors revenues and expenditures; ensures accurate financial reporting and appropriate internal controls.
• Oversees admissions, rentals, gift shop, donations, and other earned and contributed revenue streams.
• Provides leadership oversight of the Sprig of Heather Restaurant, a licensed and significant revenue operation, ensuring effective integration with events, visitor experience, and overall financial sustainability.
• Identifies and pursues grants, sponsorships, and funding opportunities.
• Supports fundraising initiatives, donor relations, and stewardship activities.

Community Engagement and Public Relations
• Acts as a key ambassador and public representative for the organization.
• Strengthens the organization’s visibility and relevance within Salmon Arm, the Shuswap Region, and the broader tourism community.
• Oversees marketing, communications, and visitor experience initiatives that support attendance, engagement, and public value.
• Supports educational programming and outreach to schools and community groups.
• Builds and maintains productive relationships with the City of Salmon Arm, community organizations, Indigenous partners, tourism bodies, and other stakeholders.

Qualifications
Education and Experience

  • 5+ years’ senior leadership experience in a complex, public-facing organization with responsibility for operations, staff, and financial management.
  • Post-secondary education in business administration, nonprofit management, tourism management, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of post-secondary education and senior leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and managing budgets, overseeing revenue, and monitoring organizational performance and sustainability.
  • Strong understanding and preferred experience in grant writing, fundraising, and sponsorship development.
  • Experience working in environments that integrate operations, tourism, events, hospitality, volunteers, and community partnerships is an asset.

Details
This is a full-time position that requires the incumbent to work on-site. Flexibility to work outside of standard hours, including evenings and weekends, is required during the peak season (May – September).

The annual salary for the General Manager is $71,400.
